High Heels: How High Can You Go?

It's no secret women love high heels. It's no secret the higher the heel, the higher the status. Unfortunately, women are giving into fashion rules over their own flesh and blood...their feet! Wearing high heels, especially all the time, can cause serious problems for your feet. These problems, if not treated, can become very painful, even very permanent.

Studies have shown wearing high heels can weaken your calf muscle. Wearing heels consistantly will train the calf muscle to be in a positiion where it is closer to the knee. Over time this will cause the muscle to be in this position which will actually make it uncomfortable to wear flat shoes. Also, it increases instability in the ankle which can lead to more ankle sprains. Of course this leads to serious trauma for the feet. For one, the high heels push the foot down into the cramped area of the shoe box which will begin to harm your toenails. It has a huge affect on all of your tendons in the calf and foot.

To prevent such serious complications, simple steps such as trying the shoes on before purchasing them will help. You may think the shoe is not that high until you actually try to walk in them. If you have already purchased the shoe, you are more likely to make your foot suffer just to show them off. Also, wear heels as little as possible. On your way to work, at lunch, on your way home, switch to flats.

You do not have to give up your heels, you just need an equal balance.

Click here to read an article written by an nj foot doctor, Dr. peter Wishnie, on how to keep wearing your heels, painfree!!

Footwear Can Make or Break You

This article describes the importance of proper shoewear, especially in the form of arch support. Improper shoewear can cause hammertoes, bunions, ingrown toenails, metatarsalgia and more. It is very important to make sure your arches are supported to ensure a healthy, painfree foot. High heels, work boots, dress shoes can all be very damaging to your foot.

Tight shoes, high heels, lack of support can all lead to very damaging effects on the foot, and can cause a lot of pain. It is important to wear the correct shoes for your activity. Bring sneakers with your high heels if you need to walk to lunch or from the car to the office, wear supportive sneakers whenever you exercise, and make sure your shoes fit properly. However, many shoes do not offer the amount of arch support many people need, and are lacking.

A great treatment method for someone experiencing foot pain or lack of support are custom or prefabricated inserts, called orthotics. Orthotics can be custom made to fit your exact foot. A mold of your foot is taken and made into an orthotic which will easily fit into your shoe. Prefabricated orthotics are great as a second pair orthotic. We have so many patients that see the incredible results of orthotics.

We have a Certified Pedorthist, Dawn Lewis, who is trained and certified to fit your feet with the perfect orthotc or shoe customization. To make an appointment, please call our office, or click here to submit a request through our website.

Diabetics Face Serious Foot problems Like Amputations

Diabetics face serious foot problems. Many diabetics do not realize that if they do not closely monitor their feet and have them checked regularly they could endure toe, foot, even leg amputations. At Greenville Memorial Hospital, there is a major diabetic amputation every three days. "It is a cruel disease," says Dr. John York, a vascular surgeon who performs such surgeries.

Diabetes causes nerve damage, such as diabetic neuropathy, and limits or eliminates feeling in the feet. When a sore develops or even a minor cut occurs, diabetics may not notice the problem until it is too late. The infection that developed in the wound can spread all the way to the bone. Amputations restrict the quality of life and force people to become more dependent on others.

To read more on this article click here.

In order to prevent serious complications, diabetics need to constantly check their feet thoroughly including the top, between toes, and on the bottom (using a mirror or another person to check the bottom may help). The American Diabetes Association suggests diabetics get the Comprehensive Diabetic Foot Exam (CDFE) at least once a year. In addition, Medicare has developed many beneficial programs for high risk diabetics including the "free shoe" program where they allow for a pair of diabetic shoes and three inserts annually.*

How Diabetic Neuropathy Can Effect Your Feet

This article describes a very common condition that effects many diabetics called Diabetic Neuropathy. Diabetic Neuropathy causes a loss of sensation in the feet. Poor blood circulation happens when the arteries harden from smoking, high blood pressure, high fat levels in the blood, and high blood sugar. The poor circulation then causes pain while sleeping, walking, and cold feet. Once the feet lose the nerves which relays to the brain of any sensations in the foot, the real trouble has begun. Having nerve damage is very dangerous, for instance, you may have a cut on the bottom of your foot, a rock pressing hard on your foot, or a sharp edge on your shoe or sock that is causing serious damamge. Without the nerves to tell your brain that there is danger in the foot area, you will never know and go on injuring yourself, sometimes to the point that the damage is irreversible.

To read more on this article click here.

Flat Feet

Flat Feet

Some people have flat feet (no arches) and it doesn't cause them any problems. However, more often than not, if you have flat feet you are very aware of it because it does create pain in your feet, legs and back. The medical term for flat feet is pes planus.
The aim of the arch in the foot is to give us spring and distribute our body weight across our feet and legs. The structures of the arches of our feet determine how we walk - they are rigid levels which allow us to move smoothly. However, the arches need to be sturdy as well as flexible to adapt to various surfaces and stresses.

Definition:
If you have flat feet, this means that your arch has collapsed or never developed. This can be an inherited condition, meaning you may be born this way or you may develop this condition when you get older. All babies are, in fact, born with flat feet because their arch hasn't yet developed. Sometimes it never develops. Flat feet can also develop due to an injury, wear and tear due to age or a medical condition (such as rheumatoid arthritis, cerebral palsy).
Flatfeet can cause problems and pain in your ankles, knees and back because the condition can force your ankles to turn inward and this throws off the alignment of your legs and back. Even if you aren't experiencing any pain, treatment in most cases is still necessary to prevent problems in the future.

Symptoms:
Symptoms may vary and generally depend on the severity of the condition. If your feet are flat, you may experience swelling and pain on the inside of your ankle, foot pain, lower leg pain and back pain. Another indicator that you have flat feet will be uneven wearing of your shoes, plus you will be able to see the outright appearance of a flat foot, which looks significantly different from a foot with an arch.

Diagnosis:
There are two different kinds of flat feet. If you have a rigid flat foot, that means that the foot is flat regardless of whether you are sitting or standing. Those with a flexible flat foot will have a bit of an arch when they are sitting down, but that arch disappears when the person stands up and puts weight on his feet. This can lead to ankle and foot pain as well as leg, hip and knee pain. Individuals with rigid flat feet generally experience more problems and symptoms. Most qualified health care professionals can diagnose flat feet just by watching the patient stand, walk and examining his/her feet. In some cases the physician may order an X-ray, CT (computed tomography) scan, or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan.

Treatment Options:
• Well fitted and supportive shoes that are extra wide. Most patients are not wearing the right size or type of shoes for their feet.

• Fitted insoles or orthotics (custom-designed for each foot) relieve pressure from the arch and reduce pain. A good custom orthotic is an extremely valuable and simple treatment that will correct most patients’ flat feet.

• Wearing a specially designed brace may help patients that have painful tendonitis. The brace stops the foot and ankle from moving and allows the inflammation to calm down.

• Rest, Ice and anti-inflammatory medications

• Physical Therapy can strengthen the muscles around the foot and ankle and also increase range of motion in the joints. Thus, helping patients reduce their pain, inflammation and walk correctly.

• In some cases surgical intervention is required. There are many surgical procedure that will correct flat feet permanently, you doctor will best be able to determine which procedure is best for your particular case.

So to summarize, flat feet can be an extremely painful and debilitating condition that severely limit a person’s lifestyle. You can be born with flat feet or it may develop as you get older. Flat feet are very easy to diagnose and there are some very simple yet effective treatments. Again, even if flat feet don’t cause pain, they should still be treated in order to prevent problems from occurring in the future.

Bunions

Bunions

A bunion is a bony bump on the joint at the base of the big toe. As the bump gets bigger, it causes the big toe to turn in toward the second toe. The tissues around the joint may be swollen and tender.
You may get bunions if:
 The way your foot is shaped puts too much pressure on your big toe joint. Because bunions can run in families, some experts believe that the inherited shape of the foot makes some people more likely to get them.
 Your foot rolls inward too much when you walk.
 You have flat feet.
 You often wear shoes that are too tight.
All of these may put pressure on the big toe joint. Over time, the constant pressure forces the big toe out of alignment, bending it toward the other toes.

To help our patients get relief from bunion pain we would most likely recommend, wearing wider shoes, orthotics, foot pads, oral anti-Inflammatories, and injections. Our doctors are all qualified to perform same day procedures, which will have our patients comfortable in just a few weeks.

Podiatrist

It's so crazy that years after I needed a podiatrist, I ended up working for one. At the age of 7, I had stepped on a piece of glass on the bottom of my foot. That one piece of glassed cause me to walk on the side of my foot instead of how everyone else walks. Now I have what podiatrist call a fallen arch, or in plain words-no arch. So for all you parents out there, whose kids step on glass, a nail, or anything, take them to a foot doctor. This way they can get treated and taught how to walk properly.

Guide to Health insurance

Health insurance is a hot button issue in America today, yet so many don’t fully understand how it works. I am going to review some commonly asked and frequently confused topics.

When going through your benefits paper work you may come upon terms such as Flexible Spending Account and Health Savings Account and be unsure exactly what these terms mean or the difference between them.

A Flexible Spending Account or FSA is an option provided by some employers that allows you to set money aside for medical expenses and reduces your amount of taxable income.

You would choose an amount of pre-tax dollars to be set aside from your paycheck each pay period; this may be a set dollar amount or a percentage of your paycheck. You then may use this money for health related expenses through out the year, such as co-pays, deductibles, prescriptions etc. Some employers offer a FSA card that acts as a credit card. Others may require you save your receipts and submit them to your benefits administrator or the third party administrator handling your account.

It is important to note that with an FSA you will have a year to utilize these funds. This may be a plan year or a calendar year. Some employers have grace periods of 30, 60 or 90 days after the end of the year of which you can utilize these funds. However, once the year has passed and your grace period is over, any funds remaining in the account will be forfeited. This is why it is important to select an amount of holdings that will meet your needs. Also, the IRS does not allow medical expenses paid with your FSA to be claimed as a tax deduction.

Health Savings Accounts (HSA) were enacted by the Medicare bill signed by President Bush in 2003. This allows individuals with approved high deductibles health plans (HDHP) to save for medical expenses on a tax free basis. There are minimum deductible requirements and maximum contributions limits. If you are eligible, you can use these savings to pay for your medical expenses or those of your spouse or dependents. You can find out more information about FSA’s and HSA’s on the IRS. The Department of the Treasury also has a direct link to information about HSAs on its web site.

By: Sarah Avilleira

High Arches Can Lead to Pain

Got High Arches?

Do you have a history of frequent ankle sprains? Do you feel unstable on uneven surfaces? If so, you may have high arches. Everyone is born with a certain foot type as it is often inherited. Over time depending on your foot type – flatfeet or high arches – you are prone to certain conditions. A high-arched foot is called pes cavus foot type and it is a condition causing the foot to be very rigid. High arches are not able to absorb a lot of shock from the forces of weight bearing. If you are involved in any type of sport, such as basketball or soccer, or you are a runner, you have an even higher chance of developing certain conditions associated with high arches.
Ankle instability on the outside or lateral ankle is very common with high arched feet. Any sudden twist or turn can cause the ankle to turn in or INVERT. If the twist has enough energy it can lead to an acute lateral ankle sprain. If the force is very high, then this can lead to an ankle fracture, which can require surgical repair of the fracture.
Stress fractures, especially of a bone called the fifth metatarsal, is another condition associated with high arched feet. This is not caused by one specific injury rather it is due to repetitive use. If you are on your feet a lot, you started a new activity or job, you started walking or running on a hard surface or if you are constantly on your feet for work ,you can develop this condition. With stress fractures the hard outside bone called the cortex is intact though the inside of the bone is cracked. These injuries do not always show on X-ray and if they do they are very subtle and can take 10-14 days to show up on the X-ray films. Initial treatment is immobilization in a walking boot for 4-6 weeks.
Tendonitis, most commonly of the outside tendons called the personal tendons, is another common condition associated with high arches. Tendonitis is swelling and pain of the tendon. Initial treatment is temporary immobilization and physical therapy to strengthen the tendon.
Joint pain is another common condition where there is a lot of pain in the subtler joint . This is the joint that lets your foot go side to side. Cortisone or steroid injections can help with the acute pain.
Long-term treatment for all of these conditions is simple. Customized orthotics (inserts) to functionally stabilize the foot to the ankle are essential to correct the root cause of the conditions. Orthotics will functionally “straighten” out the high arches allowing for more pressure in the arch area and less on the outside lateral foot and ankle. A softer semi-rigid orthotic is crucial for a high arch to provide shock absorption. This will reduce the pressure off the outside of the foot to prevent the tendonitis, stress injuries, fractures and sprains most common with high arches. Orthotics should also be utilized as prevention before a problem arises. So if you, your child, or someone you know has high arches especially if that person is very active, you should visit your local podiatrist for a comprehensive foot evaluation. You will be advised to get customized orthotics, a process done in the podiatrist’s office where an impression is made of your foot.

Shoes and Pedorthics
Shoes come in fixed shapes and sizes, but unfortunately the feet that wear them don't. Throughout your life, your feet will broaden as well as get longer. Feet also change shape and size with every movement we make. The feet absorb an enormous amount of stress simply by going through our daily routine.

Pedorthics is the design, manufacture, modification and fit of footwear, including orthoses, to alleviate problems caused by disease, congenital condition, overuse, or injury. Through pedorthics, shoes and foot orthoses can become therapeutic tools addressing a variety of common or complex foot problems in a conservative, non-surgical way.

Orthotics and Corrective Shoes can help to relieve pain caused by plantar fasciitis, achilles tendonitis, diabetes feet, ankle pain, and much more. The results from implementing orthotics or corrective shoes into someone's life is incredible.

Nail fungus & Keryflex

Nail fungus (onychomycosis) is a fungal nail infection of the fingernails and toenails. - These fungal infections usually cause discoloration, thickening and often softening of the nails.
In our office we are currently offering Keryflex, which is a nail restoration system that restores the appearance of the natural nail. It uses resins and special activators to create a durable artificial nail. It only takes about 10-15 minutes and the result is a natural looking and feeling nail which leaves our patients happy and more confident about their nails.
I wonder how long it will take him to make this decision. No statement has been released of the actual diagnosis or the procedure needed but Favre did mention possible removal of bone spurs at the ankle joint.

Bone spurs at the ankle joint are often caused by osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease. Osteoarthritis of the ankle is common after several ankle sprains or many ankle sprains over many years. Over time, the wear and tear of the joint will lead to damage of the cartilage and bone. As the bone breaks down, new bone is formed. The new bone, or osteophyte, can cause irritation of the surrounding tissues and lead to pain and inflammation.

For Brett Favre, his normal daily activities don’t cause severe ankle pain but complex workouts and games do cause pain and irritation. He has made statements discussing his ankle pain as non-debilitating. I assume that his ankle problems are due to bone spurs and scar tissue that has build up in the ankle joint from repeated ankle sprains or other injuries. This is often referred to as ankle impingement syndrome.

Surgery for this condition is very minor and can be performed with only small incisions. An arthroscope is used to view and inspect the joint. A shaver can then be used with the scope to remove any access tissue and debris in the area of the joint. The bone spurs can also be removed without large skin incisions. These types of procedures are termed minimally invasive and have faster recovery time. If Brett Favre is suffering from impingement syndrome, he can have the procedure done and be back to normal activity within 4-8 weeks.

Considering the surgery is minor and the recovery time is short, it surprises me that there is even a debate on whether or not he will have surgery. If he has surgery, will he be a Viking for one more year? If he does not have the surgery, will he actually retire? I have a feeling we won’t know until the first game of the season. Brett Favre’s career has been full of drama, and we will add this to his epic tale. Football legend debates minor surgery for non-debilitating ankle injury. Neither are career ending but retirement has not been taken off the table!

Podiatrist Piscataway, NJ Podiatrist Hillsborough, NJ Insurance Benefits

It’s that time of year again. April 1st is the start of a new health care enrollment season for many employers. This can be a confusing time for patients. Many benefits that were covered previously may not be covered now. Patient’s that have never needed referrals before, may now need them. This is a good time for patient’s to review their health insurance manual. Knowing the ins and outs of your personal insurance plan will not only be beneficial to you, but also will aid a smooth transition between your old plan and new plan.

Something to also keep in mind is even though your ID number and/or plan premium haven’t changed, your benefits could have. In tough economic times such as these, employers are sometimes forced to make tough decisions when it comes to their employee’s benefits. Choosing a plan that raises your co-pay from $10 to $20 may save your employer substantial funds overall. So, while your premium hasn’t changed, your co-pay or other benefits may have. This is why it is important to review your open enrollment documents every year. Educating yourself will prepare you both mentally and financially for any healthcare needs that may arise.

New Discoveries in Barefoot Running

Physical therapy professor co-authors Nature paper on barefoot running

Irene Davis

The paper, “Foot Strike Patterns and Collision Forces in Habitually Barefoot Versus Shod Runners,” provides evidence that modern cushioned running shoes actually change the body's natural gait in a way that can lead to injuries such as tibial stress fractures and plantar fasciitis.

Davis's co-authors on the paper include researchers from Harvard University, University of Michigan Medical School, Providence Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Rhode Island, Moi University Medical School in Kenya, and University of Glasgow in the U.K.

The researchers compared foot strike kinematics among five groups of runners, including three categories of adult subjects -- habitually shod athletes from the U.S., Kenyan athletes who grew up running barefoot but now wear cushioned shoes, and American runners who grew up wearing shoes but now run barefoot or in minimal footwear -- as well as two groups of adolescents, one of barefoot runners who have never worn shoes and the other of runners who have worn shoes most of their lives.

The researchers found that the habitually barefoot endurance runners from Kenya typically strike the ground with the forefoot, referred to as fore-foot strike (FFS), or the mid-foot (MFS). In contrast, the habitually shod American athletes were more likely to land on the heel, referred to as rear-foot strike (RFS).

RFS, which results from the elevated heel on the shoes, generates greater collision forces than the FFS and MFS associated with barefoot running. The forces travel up the body and may cause impact-related injuries to the feet and lower legs.

“Differences between RFS and FFS running make sense from an evolutionary perspective,” the paper states. “If endurance running was an important behavior before the invention of modern shoes, then natural selection is expected to have operated to lower the risk of injury and discomfort when barefoot or in minimal footwear. Most shod runners today land on their heels exclusively. In contrast, runners who cannot or prefer not to use cushioned shoes with elevated heels often avoid RFS landings and thus experience lower impact transients than do most shod runners today, even on very stiff surfaces.”

The paper represents the work of a truly interdisciplinary group of researchers, including not only physical therapy and biomechanics but also engineering, biomedical and life sciences, and evolutionary biology.

Last year, Davis began to collaborate with Harvard's Dan Lieberman, lead author on the paper, because of a common interest in barefoot and minimal footwear running and their complementary areas of research expertise.

“Dan is a human evolutionary biologist whose research is focused on why we evolved to run and how we ran before shoes,” Davis says. “I am a clinical biomechanist who has been studying the relationship between running biomechanics and injury, and how this relationship might be altered when running barefoot. This overlap in interest provided a natural synergy that has been very exciting for both of us.”

The two are planning a trip to Kenya during the summer of 2010 to conduct a more extensive mechanical analysis of the habitually barefoot runners.

Head of the University of Delaware Running Research Laboratory, Davis conducts research on the relationships among lower extremity structure, mechanics and injury during human locomotion. She is particularly interested in helping runners improve their mechanics so that they can run pain free.

A runner herself, Davis has been widely quoted in the popular media recently on the issue of barefoot running. Christopher McDougall, author of the best-selling book Born to Run, has referred to her as “a barefoot skeptic turned convert.” She is now logging about 20 miles per week on asphalt and has found that it doesn't hurt. “The harder the surface,” she says, “the more lightly you land and the more easily you spring back.”

“The way in which this has all come together has been such a perfect storm,” Davis says. “In my studies of running injuries, I have found that the impact transient associated with heel strike is associated with injury. As a result, we have been developing a novel gait retraining intervention using real-time feedback to reduce this loading in shod runners.”

She continues, “We also know that when individuals take their shoes off and run, they avoid a heel strike because it hurts. This suggests that our heel pad was not designed to attenuate the loads of impact during running. One could argue that it is because we wear shoes all the time and our heel has adapted to this. However, our work with Kenyans who have never worn shoes further substantiates our hypothesis, as they also avoid heel striking when they run. Shoes encourage a rear-foot strike pattern, as runners can increase their stride length and land on their heels. But they pay for it with an impact peak that we weren't designed for.”

The research reported in the paper was funded by the National Science Foundation, the American School of Prehistoric Research, the Goelet Fund, Harvard University and Vibram USA.

Published weekly, Nature is the world's most highly cited interdisciplinary science journal.
The APMA Explains How To Pick Shoes That Will Not Cause Foot Pain

How To Give Foot Troubles The Boot

(NAPSI)-While many boots today may win high fashion awards, they can be less than kind to your feet. According to a survey by the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), 27 percent of women who experienced heel pain reported their footwear as the chief cause.

"Whether you're wearing them for protection from rain or snow or for style, it is vastly important to pay attention to how a boot fits," said Dr. Ronald Jensen, APMA president.

These tips from podiatrists may help you pull on your most stylish boots without harming your tootsies:

• Have feet measured, as foot size can change throughout life. Keep in mind, too, that your boot size may not be the same in all styles and brands.

• Try boots on in the afternoon--feet tend to swell during the day.

• Most people's feet are not the exact same size. Get boots that fit your larger foot.

• Carry an insole for arch support when boot shopping. Insert when trying on.

• Boots should feel comfortable when tried on in the store; there shouldn't be a "break-in" period.

• Different styles and materials can affect how your feet feel. Synthetic materials trap in heat and moisture, causing odor. A boot constructed of natural materials, such as leather, will keep feet dry and comfortable.

• Choose a boot with plenty of toe room, a firm heel counter, and traction to ensure stability.

• Snow boots can become slick in inclement weather. Select a pair with rubber soles and deep grooves for proper traction.

• Trendy ankle boots often lack enough ankle support. Coupled with a high heel, this can cause an imbalance. Select a heel no more than two inches high and avoid walking long distances in them.

• Narrow and very high heels on boots transfer your weight onto the ball of your foot and can cause pain and numbness. Select a lower heel or stacked style of heel for additional support.

Are Your High Heels too High?

Are your heels too high?
By Allen Pitman
The human body’s basic design has remained unchanged for a few thousand years. It seems we’ve reached a point where further evolution/development of the model was unecessary. Things are working fine.

Most of the problems with health. Obesity, diabetes, heart disease etc can be resolved by going back to a diet similar to what our ancestors survived on.

The human body was designed, or developed to walk and run with bare feet. As our ancestors ventured into prickle country, the sandal was developed. This simple foot protection device, didn’t have a steel toe cap. People were responsible for their own toes and avoided dropping things on them.

The sandal didn’t have an arch support. The human foot supported its own arch. In fact the arch (for those with any building/engineering knowledge) should not be supported under the middle, it only needs supporting at each end. The arches in the colliseum have been standing for two thousand years supported at the ends only.

The arch of the human foot is a shock absorbing mechanism. Fallen arches (flat feet) are a symptom of the human body not being used in the way it was designed. It’s interesting to research the incidence of fallen arches in primitive tribes where if you need to go somewhere, you walk. If you’re in a hurry, you run. In fact a lot of modern, city dwellers problems don’t exist in many primitive cultures.

Another feature of modern shoes which the early sandal didn’t feature was the heel. The sandal was the same thickness piece of hide through it’s whole length. In fact it was just a thicker sole for the tribesman’s foot. These primitive people never needed orthotics, in fact my father did his trade as a bootmaker. The bootmaker catered for any “special needs” in footware. Back in those days there were no podiatrists, nobody I ever met in my first twenty years ever had orthotics.

If an athlete has a foot problem which is deemed to need orthotics, isn’t it evidence that something needs strengthening? Or does it mean the athlete is doing something wrong in his/her movement which needs correcting? I’m amazed how few people do any run drill type work. I’m amazed how little attention is given to “how to run, and walk correctly”.

Shoe manufacturers are selling the idea that the sandal made from animal skin with no cushioning or arch support is no longer safe for humans to run in. This is after 40,000 years of use. I wonder if acheological studies have found stress fractures in the legs of primative skeletons? It is interesting to dig up the old video of the movie “Chariots of Fire” and check out the footwear used at that time. Old photos of John Landy or Roger Bannister show them running in shoes with no more cushioning than an animal hide sandal.

Running in a sandal, or bare foot, encourages he runner to hit the ground gently. Like a leopard or a jaguar. Also running barefoot encourages a runner to land on his/her forefoot, allowing the heel to come down to contact the ground before pushing forward with the forefoot. Through this whole process, the shock of impacting the ground is controlled by the natural movement of the foot and ankle.

Another interesting feature of running bare foot or in a thin soled shoe is, the runner contacts the ground right below his/her hips and simply pushes the ground back. The runner just does not strike the ground in front of his body with a heel first strike, it’s too painful. Now isn’t pain a sign that something is “wrong”?

Now if we put the same runner in a pair of very well cushioned running shoes sold by a shop assistant who chants the same spiel to the customer that the shoe manufacturer fed him. The runner now is more inclined to land heel first, striking the ground in front of his/her body. This has a braking effect on forward movement, then as the forefoot comes down and impacts the ground a slapping sound indicates a much greater impact than is necessary.

There is another interesting psychological angle here. When a runner is going well, he’s leaning into the wind. A boxer fighting well is on his forefoot and moving forward. Both positive mental states, indicated by body language. When a boxer is copping a hiding, retreating from his opponent, he’s on his heels and leaning back. When a runner hits the wall, his body language instantly changes. He no longer leans into the wind, he drops back onto his heels. His whole posture changes from tall and slightly forward to slumped and leaning slightly back.

A runner in an Ironman triathlon who walks as part of his game plan, runs to an aid station, walks his scheduled number of steps, then runs on, does not change his posture. It’s part of the plan and it’s all positive. On the other hand a runner in the same race gives into the pain and starts to walk as a survival strategy, his body language changes immediately. He leans back, his height drops and he’s walking on his heels.

Body lauguage is an indicator of mental state. Mental state is influenced by body movement. It’s easier to think positively when we have more pressure on our fore foot, than it is when we have more pressure on our heels.

It will pay athletes interested in competing well in long distance triathlon to learn good run technique. It will pay the same athletes to run in shoes with less heel height. It will pay these same athletes to do some running bare foot.

Start out running on the beach or a grassy park, short distances, punctuated by walks. Don’t change the posture as you change from running to walking. Stay tall and relaxed, leading each stride with the knees, pushing the ground back with the feet. This is simply a run technique development strategy, not a long distance training plan.

Will any Pacers pick up Grangers slack?

Will any Pacers pick up Granger's slack?

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 | Print Entry

Posted by Tom Carpenter, Special to ESPN.com

It's never a good sign when a player pulls up lame for no apparent reason. You could tell right away when Danny Granger started hopping on his left foot during Saturday's game that the injury to his right foot could be serious. That was confirmed Tuesday when an MRI revealed a torn plantar fascia in his right foot, which will keep him sidelined the next four to six weeks.

After missing just six games during his first three seasons, Granger missed 15 games with a sore foot and knee last season -- and now this. It's pretty clear his body isn't holding up to the workload of 36 minutes and close to 19 shots per night. Plantar fascia injuries tend to linger, too, so there's no certainty we'll see Granger close to full speed for many months.

Mike Dunleavy would be the clear-cut beneficiary in Granger's absence, but he's working his way back from his own long-term injury and is supposed have the governor set at 20 minutes per night. Still, the Indiana Pacers may have no choice but to unleash Dunleavy in the next month if they want to make the playoffs, though they'd risk not having him available in April by doing so.

Obviously, there are plenty of shots available for other Pacers, but so far this season guys like T.J. Ford, Earl Watson and Brandon Rush have failed to capitalize. Watson's capable of contributing dimes in deep leagues, even as a reserve. Starting point guard Ford has a great opportunity to bust out, but he's shown little reason to believe he'll actually do so. Rush can drop the trey, but he'll have to play at both ends of the court to satisfy his coach. We could also see a little more run from Roy Hibbert and Tyler Hansbrough in the frontcourt.

Until they step up, though, look for Troy Murphy and Dahntay Jones to shoulder most of the scoring burden for the Pacers.

High Heels Today, Foot Pain Tomorrow

Sept. 29, 2009 -- Wearing high heels today may hurt just a little, but even bigger foot pain may be in store later on.

A new study shows that people who make poor shoe choices early in life by wearing unsupportive footwear like high heels, sandals, and slippers are much more likely to suffer from foot pain in later years.

The study showed that men don’t experience the same type of foot pain as women, largely because of the type of shoes men wear. Researchers say the findings may help explain why women are much more likely than men to have foot pain.

Foot and toe pain are among the top 20 reasons adults aged 65-74 visit their physician, but researchers say relatively little is known about the causes of foot pain in older adults. Previous studies on footwear and foot pain have been small or based on people with a particular disease.

Causes of Foot Pain

In this study, published in Arthritis Care & Research, researchers examined the effects of footwear choices early in life on foot pain later in life in a group of 3,378 adults who participated in the Framingham Foot Study.

Health Tip: Foot Care For People With Diabetes

Health Tip: Foot Care for People With Diabetes

Tue Oct 27, 11:49 pm ET
(HealthDay News) -- People with diabetes are especially prone to foot problems, so it's important to take good care of your feet and inspect them frequently.
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons offers these suggestions:

Wash your feet daily with soap and water, and carefully dry them afterward.

Use a rich moisturizer on your feet, but don't apply it between the toes.

Keep toenails trimmed, but cut them straight across. Clipping the corners can lead to ingrown nails.

Avoid using antiseptics, sharp tools or heating pads on the feet.

Keep feet warm and dry with cozy socks.

Prevent circulatory problems by avoiding smoking. And don't sit with your legs crossed

National Physical Therapy Month

ALEXANDRIA, VA

National Physical Therapy Month, sponsored by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), is a nationwide observance held each October. This year's theme, "Move Forward: Physical Therapy Brings Motion to Life" reflects the physical therapist brand, "Physical therapists help you restore and improve motion to achieve long-term quality of life."

"Freedom of motion is vital to our lives," said APTA President R. Scott Ward, PT, PhD. "Motion is anti-aging and something we tend to take for granted until we lose it. Physical therapists are experts in the way the body moves, so we can help improve people’s quality of life by helping them move freely so they can do the things they want to do without pain and discomfort."

When APTA went out to conduct consumer research to learn about attitudes and perceptions related to physical therapists, consumers made it clear that they were more likely to choose a physical therapist if they knew he or she could significantly improve mobility to perform daily activities and, in many cases, provide an alternative to painful and expensive surgery as well as manage or eliminate pain without medication.

To kick off National Physical Therapy Month, APTA has created an online toolkit with resources for APTA members, the media, and the general public.

Physical therapists are highly-educated, licensed health care professionals who can help patients reduce pain and improve or restore mobility – in many cases without expensive surgery or the side effects of prescription medications. APTA represents more than 72,000 physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and students of physical therapy nationwide. Its purpose is to improve the health and quality of life of individuals through the advancement of physical therapist practice, education, and research. In most states, patients can make an appointment directly with a physical therapist, without a physician referral.
Tom DeLay is saying good-bye to Dancing With the Stars.

I just got word that the former Republican congressman will announce on tonight's results show that his injuries have left him no choice but to drop out of the competition.

With stress fractures in both of his feet, the 62-year-old Texan performed the samba last night against the advice of his doctors and DWTS producers.

DeLay started feeling pain before the season even premiered...

Just days after he began training with Cheryl Burke, he was off to see a doctor. "They put me in Latin shoes with high heels, and my toes almost fell off the first week," DeLay told me at the time. "So I went to a podiatrist, and I got a little problem with my feet. A cortisone shot cured me up."

DeLay is not the first star to drop out because of injury. Jewel and Nancy O'Dell were replaced after they exited before last season's premiere. In October 2008, Olympic volleyball star Misty May-Treanor walked away mid-competition when she ruptured her Achilles tendon during practice.

A rep for the show declined to comment on DeLay's expected announcement.

Manning Cleared to Play with Pain

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Eli Manning is going to have to play in pain if he wants to continue as the New York Giants quarterback.

Manning was diagnosed with inflamed tissue in his right foot late Monday following an MRI at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. It's a problem that usually develops over time and lingers.

ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen first reported the diagnosis.

Team physician Russell Warren told Manning he could play this weekend against the Oakland Raiders if he could tolerate the pain.

"It's not as serious an injury as [the doctor] has seen before, where it's the whole foot that's hurting," Manning said in an interview on ESPN Radio in New York. "It's just kind of a portion of it."

The Giants (4-0) have listed Manning as day to day with the plantar fasciitis, which has caused soreness and swelling in the heel and arch area on the bottom of his foot.

Dr. Steven Weinfeld, chief of foot and ankle surgery from Mount Sinai's Department of Orthopaedics in New York City, said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press that the injury could be treated by taping the foot, stretching, cushioning the area and using ibuprofen or any anti-inflammatory medicine. He said cortisone injections also can help.

The past 24 hours have been a scary time for Giants faithful, knowing an injury could suddenly elevate veteran David Carr to the starting job this weekend against Oakland, and a serious injury could crush hopes of another championship run.

Manning, who has thrown for 1,039 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions this season, was hurt early in the fourth quarter in a non-contact injury in New York's 27-16 win over the Chiefs in Kansas City.

The MVP of the Super Bowl in February 2008 made a fake on play-action and went back to throw. As he planted his right foot, he suddenly hopped as if he had stepped in a divot or something popped. He threw an incomplete pass to Steve Smith seconds later.

The play reminded many of the season-ending Achilles tendon injury former Jets quarterback Vinny Testaverde suffered at the start of the 1999 season.

"Of the things it could have been, it's one of the better ones," Weinfeld said of the diagnosis.

While the words were comforting, so was the sight of Manning standing in front of his locker earlier in the afternoon with neither a boot, a crutch or much evidence of heavy tape on his right foot.

The only obvious sign of an injury was a slight limp when he walked away.

"Yeah, that's all positive stuff," Manning said. "I think it's just time and ice and some treatment here and at home, kind of nonstop everything for the next couple of days. My goal is by Wednesday to be practicing and get out there and not being restricted."

Manning admittedly was concerned about his Achilles tendon briefly after his incomplete pass to Smith. He threw a touchdown pass to rookie Hakeem Nicks on the next play and then spent the rest of the game on the bench.

"I knew what it was," Manning said. "I knew it was the bottom of my foot, my heel area. I could walk around a little bit. It was good that we got a touchdown on that play, kind of gave ourselves a pretty good lead at the time."

Manning, who has started 82 consecutive games, still had some swelling and soreness Monday morning. He got ice and stimulation treatment and went through his strength program before attending meetings and talking to the media.

"It doesn't feel any worse today than it did yesterday, which is a good sign," Manning said. "Hopefully, it just gets better every day."

Manning has played through pain. He injured the A-C joint in his right shoulder in a game against Dallas early in 2007 and came back the following weekend to play against Green Bay.

"The last time, with the shoulder, [the doctor] said I'd be out a month and I played the next week," Manning said, noting Warren told him this time it's just a matter of how fast can he heal.

Coughlin said Manning is one of those players who wants to be out there with his teammates.

"I am not worried about him," guard Rich Seubert said. "A couple of years ago, he had the shoulder or whatever it was and he was fine and didn't miss anything. Then I let [Browns nose tackle] Shaun Rogers fall on him last year. He's a tough kid. I know on Sunday he will be out there playing with us."

Carr, the No. 1 pick overall by Houston in the 2002 draft and a veteran of 79 NFL starts, is ready just in case.

"I have done this before, it's not my first rodeo," Carr said. "I have a great team around me, that's the biggest thing. I think we have the best offensive line in football and throwing to some young receivers that are really excited to play, exciting to watch, exciting to throw to. I got a chance to throw to them a little bit in preseason and every day in practice, so it should be exciting. We have a good football team. I just have to go in and do my job."

Pain, a Limp and Winkle Picker's Disease

Doctors who treat themselves may have fools for patients, but they look like geniuses compared with a reporter who tried to diagnose herself via the Internet.

It seemed so simple. I Googled “foot pain,” and up came two sites with neat little pictures of feet, arrows pointing to various parts and instructions to “click where it hurts.” I clicked and, voila! both sites said my pain — on the top and side of the foot, around the big toe — was probably from a bunion or gout.
Gout? Hmmph. What came to mind was Henry VIII, the movie version, hugely fat and grotesque on his throne, bellowing about his toe. As for bunions, weren’t they from pointy shoes, high heels, a family history? I had none of those. This wasn’t quite adding up.

Onward I clicked. I took fleeting comfort from a slide slow of hideous foot diseases that I clearly didn’t have. Lists of other ailments didn’t match, either. I don’t have diabetes or flat feet and I hadn’t injured myself. One site mentioned leprosy, which had drama but seemed unlikely. I was baffled.

A podiatrist, recommended by a doctor friend, took about 37 seconds to figure out what was wrong. He shoved my big toe up and down, gave it a squeeze that made me shriek and said smugly, “We’ll take some X-rays, and I’ll show you what’s causing your pain.”

A few minutes later, there it was on his computer screen: a bone spur, sticking up like a tiny, evil spike where the big toe joins the rest of the foot. The cause was arthritis of the big toe, which sounds ridiculous even to me. But it’s real, a wearing out of the cartilage that normally protects the bones from rubbing against each other. I’ve always walked a fair amount — at least three miles a day, often twice that or more in recent years — and at 56, I guess it’s catching up with me. Without realizing it, I’ve been wearing out my feet.

Killer Heels Could Cause Arthritis

Killer heels could cause arthritis

Your slippers may be comfortable at the end of a hard day but according to new research, wearing them too regularly could cause joint problems in later life.

Sandals and high-heels were also found to be the biggest causers of future joint problems, whereas trainers were least likely to cause any conditions.

The research, carried out on behalf of the American College of Rheumatology, examined the link between joint problems and footwear. Amongst women, scientists could pinpoint a correlation between 'poor shoe choices' - such as high heels - and arthritis.

But with men, who tend to wear more comfortable shoes, there was no such link. Less than two per cent of men wear 'unhealthy' shoes.

The researchers estimate that foot and toe conditions are among the top 20 reasons patients aged 65 to 74 visit their GP in the States. And improper footwear could be one of the causes, they warn.

In total, more than 1,400 men and 1,900 women were questioned about feet problems and footwear.

Quoted in The Telegraph, the authors said: ‘While more research is needed, young women should make careful choices regarding their shoe type to avoid hindfoot pain later in life, or perform stretching exercises to alleviate the effect of high heels on foot pain.'

Pain Free Bunion Surgery

Bunions at the Dinner Table

Victoria Beckham, also known as Posh Spice, has made the news several times this year. Not because of her husband’s amazing talents or her singing career, but rather because of her feet. This Spice Girl has a very serious dilemma. Should she correct her bunions or should she continue to wear sexy shoes and deal with the pain?

A bunion deformity is when your big toe tilts toward your small toes. Over time, the big toe creeps further and further along and causes a bump to protrude out on the side of your foot. This bump is actually the bones that make up the joint at your big toe. There is not one thing that causes bunions. Simply wearing high heels will not lead to bunions though they may make the bunion worse. The most common factor linked to bunions is hypermobility of a joint in the mid-section of your foot.

To read more about bunion surgery click here.

The Advantages of Cryotherapy by emedicine from WebMD

Introduction

Cryotherapy, also known as cryosurgery, is a commonly used in-office procedure for the treatment of a variety of benign and malignant lesions. In a recent report, cryotherapy was the second most common in-office procedure after skin excision. The mechanism of destruction is necrosis, which results from the freezing and thawing of cells. Treated areas reepithelialize. Adverse effects are usually minor and short-lived.

Dermatologists have used cryotherapy since the turn of the century. After the development of the vacuum flask to store subzero liquid elements, such as nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen, the use of cryotherapy dramatically increased. By the 1940s, liquid nitrogen became more readily available, and the most common method of application was by means of a cotton applicator. In 1961, Cooper and Lee1 introduced a closed-system apparatus to spray liquid nitrogen. In the late 1960s, metal probes became available. By 1990, 87% of dermatologists used cryotherapy in their practice. The general advantages of cryotherapy are its ease of use, its low cost, and its good cosmetic results. Most skin cancers are treated with excision or other destructive procedures, such as electrodesiccation and curettage. Superficial basal cell skin cancers and Bowen disease can be treated with cryotherapy.

Think of Your Poor Feet

Causes

Bunions occur more commonly in women and can sometimes run in families. People born with abnormal bones in their feet are more likely to form a bunion. Wearing narrow-toed, high-heeled shoes may lead to the development of a bunion. The condition may become painful as extra bone and a fluid-filled sac grow at the base of the big toe.

Cryotherapy in New Jersey

Summer Bumming Hard on Your Feet!

Though it is hard to admit in a heat wave, summer is coming to a halt. It won’t be long until the kids are at school, and pumpkin picking, football games, and turkey dinners will be on the agenda! Thankfully there is still a good month of sandals and barbeque left! But, are your feet still up for the summer challenge or has summer gotten the best of them already. You may need to pay special attention to your feet on the last stretch of fun in the sun!

Complaint: My feet are dry and cracked. My feet are itchy, red, and sometimes have blisters.
Cause: Believe it or not, both of these complaints will often root from the same problem! Warm, dark, humid environments create a delightful home for fungus! Dry feet are a sign of sweaty feet and sweaty feet are a precursor to fungal feet.
Prevention: The number one thing to avoid is going barefoot in public. Wear sandals around the pool, in the locker room, and in public showers. When possible wear sandals over shoes to allow your feet to breath. Wear dry shoes, change socks often and inspect your feet on a regular basis.

Complaint: I have calluses or corns making my feet ugly. I have thick skin on my foot and it hurts.
Cause: The summer shoe selection can be referred to as the podiatrist’s best resource for job security. Too often men and women put their feet in shoes or sandals that are nowhere near the shape of their foot. This causes the foot to rub against the shoe. Friction causes a buildup of skin that can become painful or unsightly.
Prevention: Wearing wide toed shoes or just properly fitting shoes can help with this problem! Over the counter creams and lotions can help soften the skin, but be careful with corn pads. They often make the problem worse over time. If the callus or corn is continuously painful see a podiatric physician to properly remove the ailment.

Complaint: I have warts. I have a hard, flat, bump on the bottom of my foot.
Cause: Warts are caused by the human papilloma virus. It only takes a small cut or opening in the skin to allow the virus into your skin. These opening are often unseen by the naked eye. Some people are more susceptible to getting warts and need to take extra precautions to avoid the virus.
Preventions: Avoid walking around barefoot, even in your own home! If your family members have warts, you can all get warts! Avoid at home or over the counter treatments. Picking at the wart or improperly removing them can make the wart spread and what started out as one wart can quickly multiply creating a mosaic of many warts.

So as summer comes to an end make sure you keep your feet healthy and safe. If you have any
questions or concerns about your foot health or other summer threats to your feet, seek medical help
from a foot and ankle specialist also referred as a podiatrist. They are trained to treat all foot ailmentsof children an
