Peter Wishnie, DPM, a Podiatrist in Hillsborough and Piscataway, NJ, is helping to put smiles on the faces of children in need this Halloween season by buying candy from local Trick or Treaters. A friend and patient of Dr. Wishnie’s, personally designs and sews clothes for children in need, and to sweeten the deal, she adds a piece of candy to each article of clothing.
“We developed the Candy-Buy-Back Program to help children in need, and The Candy-Buy-Back program is rewarding for everyone involved,” says Dr. Wishnie, “Trick or Treaters save their teeth and make cash for their candy while those enduring tough economical times get new clothes and some sweets too”. This year alone, Family Foot & Ankle Specialists has collected over 50 pounds of candy.
The deal works well for children with many different reasons to get rid of the candy. “We have a child who comes in every year because his brother is highly allergic to nuts and the family does not even want it in the house. It’s great, instead of being upset to have to give up all his hard earned candy, he’s excited to come in and turn over the sweets for some real cash,” continues Dr. Wishnie.
A lot of people from the community, also, come in to donate their leftover Halloween candy. “We have so much leftover candy after Halloween. Instead of it just sitting around the house, now we can donate it for a good cause and at least make a few bucks back,” says Margaret Cohen of Piscataway, NJ. “We come in every year to get rid of whatever we have left.”
Family Foot & Ankle Specialists holds their Candy-Buy-Back Program annually, donating all of the proceeds to children in need. This simple benefits the community for many reasons; it decreases cavities in children, helps to prevent obesity, motivates and teaches children about money. In addition, children in need get some much needed clothes with a sweet little surprise.
