Technology
Here at Family Foot & Ankle Specialists, we want to educate and treat you on all of your foot care needs. Our doctors and staff stay highly educated in the world of Podiatric Care, and we bring that information into each treatment room. As with any field, technology has been increasing the way we treat patients. We want to provide you with the best care for your individual needs, and we want to do it with as least amount of inconveinence to you. We spend a lot of time researching and exploring new technologies to reduce pain and recovery time for our patients so you can get back to your life and doing the things you love.
Here are some of the technologies we offer:
1.) Extracorpeal Shock Wave Technology-
Extracorporeal shock wave therapy is used to treat chronic heel pain (plantar fasciitis/heel spur syndrome). During this non-invasive surgical procedure, sonic waves are directed at the area of pain using a device similar to that currently used in non-surgical treatment of kidney stones."Extracorporeal" means "outside of the body," and refers to this non-invasive surgical procedure in which strong sound waves are directed at the area of heel pain.
During the usually brief procedure of about 30 minutes, performed under local anesthesia and/or "twilight" anesthesia, strong sound waves penetrate the heel area and stimulate a healing response by the body. An overnight hospital stay is not necessary since extracorporeal shock wave therapy is performed on and outpatient basis.
This therapy is a safe and effective alternative treatment for heel pain and only requires a very short recovery time, mainly due to the elimination of costly and invasive surgical procedures. Contact us today to receive more information or to discuss the treatment options for extracorporeal shock wave therapy. 2.) Keryflex-
Keryflex is a new technology used to treat fungus nails. It is a cosmetic procedure to limit embarrassment of affected toenails. This topical treatment lasts only 15 minutes in the office and supplies NO PAIN. It is simply applied to the affected nails, those who are discolored, brittle, chipped, or peeling, and covers the unsightliness of the nail. The treated nail acts as a normal nail in that you can cut, file, even apply nail polish.
This new technology allows people to enjoy their lives without having to worry about the appearance of an "ugly" nail. This treatment can be used for summer months of sandals and open-toe shoes, for weddings, vacations, or any other time you would like to be free of embarrassment.
3.) On-Site Physical Therapy-
At our Piscataway office location we have a huge Physical Therapy Center that offers complete head-to-toe service. Our highly trained and educated physical therapists, Tiffany Little and Kathleen Ressler, are liscensed to provide complete therapy to our patients. Our Center is not just for feet, but it is perfect for foot problems.
Physical therapy is essential in a full recovery plan for many reasons. Utilizing physical therapy usually results in a a faster recovery. It will prevent more costly treatment later and reduces costs associated with lost time from work so it is a cost effective precautionary.
Our convienent location provides our patients with a great team of doctors all working together to get you recovered as quickly and efficiently as possible. Our doctors and therapists meet regularly to discuss individual treatment plans based on your exact situation. To learn more about our Physical Therapy Center click here.
4.) Cryotherapy-
Cryoanalgesia is a specialized technique for providing long-term pain relief for various podiatric conditions. People have recognized the value of cold for analgesia for thousands of years. Hippocrates left us the first written records of the use of ice for pain relief. Modem Cryoanalgesia as we know it today was developed in the early 1960's. This technique is superior to other methods of peripheral nerve destruction (e.g. alcohol injections, phenol applications, or surgical resection) because it is not followed by neuritis or neuralgia.
There are few options for successful relief from painful foot conditions. Surgical resection of the nerves often leads to recurrent nerve growths called neuromas. These neuromas are often more painful than the original problem. Narcotics do not treat nerve pain but rather only "mask" the pain.
The application of cold to tissues creates a conduction block. This is similar to the effect of local anesthetics, but the effect is long lasting. Long-term pain relief from nerve freezing occurs because the formation of an ice crystal disrupts the sensory component of the nerve structure. To learn more about Cryotherapy click here.
5.) iStep Pressure Plate-
This new technology allows our doctors to measure the foot length, width, arch type and determine pressure points. Many people are wearing the wrong sized shoe which causes many foot problems. Foot health all starts with the right sized shoe, if the shoe does not fit properly then foot problems such as bunions, hammertoes, even fungus can begin to develop.
It is vital to your foot health to be measured for length, width, and arch type. All of these factors will contribute to the size and type of shoe that most appropriately fits your feet. Many people do not realize that your shoe size can fluctuate. If you gain/lose weight, become pregnant or just overtime your feet can change size and shape so it is essential that you have your feet measured regularly. Wearing the properly fitted shoe will greatly reduce your chances for many foot problems.
6.) Ultrasound Readings-
Ultrasound technologies is a very powerful tool for diagnosing a wide array of foot ailments. Ultrasound is based on sound waves, therefore the transducer probe will give off sound waves that will travel through your body and bounce back based on the density of objects in your body. An object with a high density will be translated as white and low density will translate as black or dark images. Your doctor will be able to determine foot problems based on the outcomes of measurements of soft tissue.
While our digital X-ray machine will allow the doctors to see bone problems, the Ultrasound machine will display an image of the soft tissue. The doctors are able to look for neuromas, measure tendons and determine swelling or inflammation spots. Ultrasound is completely painless and safe. Ultrasound does not omit any radiation so it can be used with those who are pregnant or have other medical conditions.
Some other foot problems that ultrasound will measure are:
1. Heel spurs
2. Plantar Fasciitis
3. Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome and more.
7.) Digital X-Ray-
This new technology is a form of x-ray imaging that uses x-ray sensors instead of traditional x-ray photographic film. There are many benfits to this new technology and one of the most important is that it requires less radiation. In addition, it is a much more detailed image. It provides the doctors with a greater range of image. Another great advantage to using digital x-ray is that it can be stored as a digital file. It can be stored in a patient's history file as part of their medical background file.
8.) K- Laser Therapy-
Laser therapy is proven to biostimulate tissue repair and growth. The laser accelerates the healing process and decreases inflammation, pain, and scar tissue formation. In the management of chronic pain Class IV Laser Therapy can provide dramatic results, is non-addictive and virtually free of side effects. It increases circulation, water, and oxygen to the damaged area to provide an incredible healing environment.
The laser works by interacting with the tissues at the cellular level and metobolic activity increases within the cell improving the transport of nutrients across the cell membrane.
