How Do I Know if I Need a Referral From My Insurance Company?

Most often, you will need a referral from your primary care physician(PCP) if you have an HMO insurance plan to see a specialist. You will need to contact your family doctor a few days before your scheduled appointment because many primary care doctors require 24 or 48 hours of notification. The referral may have an expiration date or only allow for a certain number of visits.
