    Foot pain is common. Our office treats new and experienced runners for foot pain. While the cause and treatment for foot pain can differ for everyone, the importance of treatment is the same. The sooner you get treated for your pain, the chances of a quicker and simpler recovery do too. If you have foot pain, you should rest your feet and see a podiatrist.

    Foot can be different. For some runners starting out, foot pain is very common. Your feet and whole body are adjusting to the increased activity. This pain will be more of an ache and soreness that will begin to decrease a few days or weeks after you have started. If you have been running or involved with a high impact sport, and suddenly start to experience foot pain there is a good chance it is an injury or biomechanical issue.

    The moral of the story, yes you should stop running and check with a podiatrist. If you are a new running, you can give yourself a few days to see if the pain decreases. Getting treated early into an injury will usually make the recovery less painful, less expensive, and much faster!

Children can experience foot problems from simply growing, starting a new sport or over use from a sport. The main goal in treating children is to treat them quickly and efficiently because, as we all know, children rarely slow down. The chances of a child actually taking the time to give their body a rest and time to heal is very slim.

  • What are Some Tips to Run Without Pain?

    Some helpful tips to run without pain are proper fitted shoes, learn your terrain, and stretch! Proper fitted shoes are vital to ensure your feet will be supported and protected. Our certified pedorthist can help ensure the shoes you have fit you properly. To have the correct size shoe and type will avoid any future injuries.

    Also, wherever you are going to mainly run, make sure you are well educated about the area. Whether it’s running on the treadmill, trails, or on the street, they all require different types of preparation. Lastly, it is essential to stretch, stretch, and do more stretching! It’s important to stretch before AND after! We recommend warming up about 15 to 20 prior to stretching.

  • What is this pain in my big toe?

    If you are having pain in your big toe and feel tenderness and inflammation, a likely condition you may have is sesamoiditis, a form of tendonitis.  Sesamoiditis is an irritation or inflammation of the sesamoid bones, which are tiny bones within the tendons that run to the big toe.

    This type of condition is most common in people who play tennis, baseball, basketball. Runners and ballet dancers are likely to be diagnosed with condition as well.   Anybody who increases their activities increases their chances for this condition. Also, people with high arches are at risk for sesamoiditis. If you frequently wear high-heeled shoes this can be a contributing factor as well.

    The pain may develop gradually but with a fracture, pain will be immediate. Also, swelling and bruising may or may not be present. It’s common that you will experience difficulty and pain in bending and straightening the big toe.

  • Why is it Important to Change Your Running Shoes Frequently?

    The first question is really how often should one change their running shoe? Basically, every six months or 300 miles, whichever comes first. The reason is because as the shoe wears, specifically the midsole, you will start developing little aches and pains. Sometimes, they are not so little. These aches can show up as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, shin splints and even lower back pain.

    Even stubborn doctors, like me, forget to check their shoes. Today I ran with a new pair of shoes, and my back does not ache. On one hand I felt rejuvenated, but on the other hand, I felt stupid. I tell my patients this all the time. I have two pairs of shoes, and I just figured the second pair was still good, until one day I decided to take that split second and look at the soles of my shoes. The tread was gone. Even with my orthotics, I was not getting the control I needed when I ran.

    So, please alternate your shoes, because it takes 24 hours for the midsole to rebound. In addition, check your shoes for wear and tear, or just mark the mileage you have on each pair and the date you started using these shoes.

  • Can Athletes Benefit From Orthotics?

    Yes, most athletes can really benefit from custum made orthotics. Orthotics can prevent and treat common sports injuries. Orthotics are made to stabilize the foot as well as correct abnormalities in the foot. Problems with high or low arches can be treated with orthotics. In addition, the orthotic will help to control the ankle to prevent and later to treat ankle sprains and achilles tendon issues. The orthotic will also help with heel pain, knee pain and back pain.

  • What is Turf Toe?

    Turf toe is a common foot problem in athletes such as runners, football or soccer players. It is more common among athletes who compete or train on artificial turf, which is where it gets it's name. The pain develops in the base of the toe at the ball of the foot. The cause of turf toe is usually due to cramming the toe into the foot from jumping too hard or constant pressure from running on the hard surface. Shoes or athletic footwear may also be to blame.

    Treatments can include inflammatory injections, icing, and rest. If you have pain at the base of the toe that isn't going away, you should be seen by a doctor to have it looked at. Getting treated as soon as you notive a problem is the best way to prevent further damage.

  • What are Shin Splints?

    Shin splints are pain to either side of the leg bone, caused by muscle or tendon inflammation. It is commonly related to excessive foot pronation (collapsing arch), but may be related to a muscle imbalance between opposing muscle groups in the leg. Over use is also a common cause of shin splints.

    Proper stretching and corrective orthotics (shoe inserts) for pronation can help prevent shin splints. You should start implementing the RICE technique and see a doctor to get the best treatment.

  • What is a Stress Fracture?

    Stress fractures are incomplete cracks in bone caused by overuse. They are common in athletes and those who begin an activity and go too hard, too fast. Stress fractures left untreated may become complete fractures, which require casting and immobilization.

    You should rest, ice, compress, and elevate the foot or ankle until you can see a doctor. In order to make sure you don't have a break, you need to visit a doctor. If treated early, the healing process is painless and effective. The longer you wait to be treated, the longer the recovery will become.
