Dr. Brad Schaeffer explains how custom orthotics can prevent toe jamming pain in runners. Dr. Schaeffer treated a patient who was an avid runner but was experiencing pain in his big to joint. He was able to run through the pain most times, but after a 5k one weekend, he could barely walk.
Dr. Schaeffer used digital x-rays in his Hillsborough podiatry office to determine the pain was caused by Hallux Limitus. Hallux Limitus is a a pain and stiffness in the big toe joint. Since Dr. Schaeffer knew his patient was focused on getting back to what he loved-running, he decided custom orthotics was the best treatment option. The orthotics would offload the pressure the big toe was feeling and disperse it evenly on the other toes.
Custom orthotics are painless and effective at treating many common foot problems. There are no medications or surgery and most often, no downtime. They are a great treatment option for athletes who don't want a long recovery.
